Finding Gilbert is an emotional YA story about a contemporary teen with contemporary problems who meets a young ghost and tries to find out who he was and what happened to him. It contains themes of war, perseverance and identity. Would be a good one for Yr 8 reading list because of the Australian and war themes.

This was a well-crafted book that linked the past and present seamlessly. And the characters were memorable. I found myself really getting into the story and finished the book in only a couple days.

I especially liked that the main character, May, is different than most girls. So much so, actually, that she is more used to having boys for friends than girls. (Also, she is not at all close to her mother.)

I was hooked from the first page. Great story that just got better with every page. Can't wait to read more from this author.
